Naomi and I tried making macarons for the first time. Well, it was sorta fail.
Alright, so we decided to make chocolate macarons with nutella filling. One of the main things in recipe is the almond flour/meal. We learned that Safeway does not sell this, but luckily Pricesmart does. Unfortunately today the bulk section sold out but there was still 100g packages. Naomi brought 2 packs and it made us about 4 batches of "macarons". Our fails made them seem more like cookies.
Taste wise, it was pretty good! except the green tea one was bitter because we used way too much green tea powder. (note: next time, use a smaller amount of "flavouring" items)
Look wise, it looked like poop. The brown was normal because it's chocolate. Green tea on the other hand looked like a bit... puke green color. Nasty, i know. I was hoping for a lighter green...
Anyhow, coming into this recipes i knew how difficult it would be. I knew we wouldn't succeed on our first try. That's alright! trial and error : ) it's a learning process.
I went back to re-watch the video.
VIDEO : watch chef john make it!
SOURCE : the written recipe
I noticed all the mistake we made...
- Powder sugar is just another way of saying ICING SUGAR
- When you're beating the EGG WHITE ONLY with a EGG BEATER, you're suppose to add in the GRANULATED SUGAR. Of course, continue beating until the egg white can make a PEAK.
- after piping out the macarons onto cookie sheets, you should let them sit in the room for at least 2 HOURS !
this will help the macarons create a "foot"
So, there you go.
My tip to anyone wanting to try this recipe!
FOLLOW THE RECIPE EXACTLY HOW IT IS.
and use an ELECTRONIC SCALE ! It helps BIG time.
GOOD LUCK :)
